Space Battle Lunchtime Volume 1: Lights, Camera, Snacktion by Natalie Riess. Oni Press, 2016. 9781620103135.
Contains issues #1 – #4 of Space Battle Lunchtime.
One day, an alien “frog” comes into the dessert shop / cafe where Peony works and asks, “Do you have what it takes to be the Greatest Chef in the Galaxy?”
After she says yes, he beams her up to the space station where the reality show Space Battle Lunchtime is filmed. Peony, along with 5 other top chefs from around the star system, compete in food-based challenges using strange, interstellar ingredients. If she doesn’t do well, Zorp (the “frog”) will lose his job. But if she starts winning, she may be in danger of more than just getting kicked off the show.
The tone is very upbeat and fun, and Riess’s setting, ingredients, and aliens are all very entertaining. I’m hoping future volumes will feature the competing food show, Cannibal Coliseum, where competitors cook and eat each other.
